thing 12: i consider myself a "jack of all trades". i have dabbled in a lot of different types of crafting, almost too many to count. i sometimes wish i was just really good at one thing...

thing 13: i am described as a lead foot driver. what can i say, i like to go fast!

thing 14: since i started teaching myself how to sew, i am now the family seamstress. almost every holiday i come home with a few sewing projects for various family members. i don't really mind.

thing 15: i have a weird problem with my food touching. i don't like things to touch on my plate; like if the salad dressing runs on my chicken, i am not happy. thats why i am a big fan of divided plates! greatest idea ever.

thing 16: i actually preferred to play alone when i was younger. i really didn't mind. i am still kind of that way, i do my best crafting when i have the place to myself.

thing 17: i don't play video games, expect racing games. i get way into them and way upset if i lose. i'm sure this has to do with thing 13 :)

harry potter bow tie//tutorial

so who has seen the new Harry Potter movie?? me!! my friends and i went to see the midnight premiere. it was amazing. i was speechless. highly recommend seeing it yourself :) and i think you should make some fancy Griffindor bow ties too. i'll teach you now...it's super easy!

since i couldn't find the right striped fabric, i just made my own. but maybe you will get lucky and find some :) you will also need a sewing machine, needle, thread, scissors, and velcro.

step 1: cut a section about 1" wider than you want your bow tie width and about 4" longer than your bow tie length. then iron in each side like the picture above.

step 2: pinch the middle to form a bow shape.

step 3: insert the needle and thread and stitch a few passes to keep the bow shape. leave the needle attached. cut a small section for the middle cover and a long enough length to fit your neck. you can also you ribbon if you want to skip adding the velcro.

step 4: place the neck piece on the back of the bow and wrap the small middle cover around both. stitch the small piece tight.

step 5: sew on two pieces of velcro on either end of you neck length piece, making sure that the velcro matches up on once around your neck.

done!! enjoy wearing your fancy harry potter bow tie :)

i love how differently they all turned out :) the beauty of handmade.

thing 6: i have been known to buy something just for the pretty packaging. if it comes in something cute, why not get it?!

thing 7: i am my worst art critic. i always find my flaws in my work...i can't help it.

thing 8: when i get nervous, i don't pick my nails; i pick my nail polish.

thing 9: i have a ton of journals. i start a new one once i get bored of the other one or i find a cuter one :)

thing 10: when i was little i used to hide my favorite toys when people came over. i was good at sharing, just not my favorite toys, haha.

thing 11: one of my favorite candies are lollipops...lollipop, lollipop, oh, lolly lollipop!!

21 things before I turn 21

i saw this feature over at love elycia that she did to countdown to her birthday that i thought was just super fun, so i'm joining the fun!! you will learn some interesting things about me before i turn the big 2-1 :) so here are my first 5 things...

thing 1: i have had 7 different hair colors over the years...i'm not even sure what is my natural hair color anymore :)

thing 2: i have an unnatural fear of the mall santas. i'm pretty sure my parents traumatized me when i was little and it has resonated in me ever since. i will still avoid the santa area in the malls during the holiday.

thing 3: i love gel pens. i have so many!! i was that girl in school that carried every single color with them and used multiple colors on one page (my teachers hated that)!

thing 4: i have a hate/love relationship with coffee. i absolutely love the smell of coffee, but despise the taste.

thing 5: i love it when things are color coordinated. i have almost everything organized by color, my craft supplies, my t-shirts, my jewelry...etc.

boy has it been a crazy busy week! i can officially say that we are (mostly) settled into our new apartment after what may have been the worst moving experience EVER! i'm not kidding...here is a summary of that day:
-woke up early and moved the small stuff we could to the new place ourselves
-get a call from the moving company that they will be an hour late (mind you that we had a wedding to go to that night)
-oh, nevermind the movers will be here on time after my little chat with the company
-finally start packing up the boxes and furniture at 2:00pm
-david calls and says we have a nail in my car tire and we have to call AAA to fix it since the magical piece to change a VW tire is missing (found it later in the change jar in my car)
-movers are taking foooorrreeevvveerr, still not done loading at 4:45pm
-we leave my brother in charge while we head to the wedding at 5:15pm
-come home to a distraster of a place, because one mover passed out and it was just the one other guy and my brother moving our stuff in...
-after a few phone calls and some angry words, we got a pretty good discount off our total price.
needless to say, i am never using arizona discount movers again and i am just glad we are finally organized and settling into our new home and will be there for the next year. which i'm happy about because the sight of one more box would probably make me sick.
so i will be posting reguarly again here soon. i've missed you :)

smash book is the best

when we went to archivers in ohio i found the coolest new product for k&company! it called smash book and i love it!! when i saw this video, i was immediately hooked.

it is the perfect blend of art journaling, inspiration, and a memory box :) i had to get one!!

this pen is brilliant! it is both a pen (perfect fine tip too!) and glue. man, i wish i thought of that.

each book has a different theme, like doodle or modern. i got the teal retro one and there are some super cute pages!

there are also adorable accessories and embellishments that go with the line. i love these clips!!

i can't wait to fill of my book :)

my parents just moved to Ohio and this was me and david's first time visiting there. we had a blast, to say the least!! already planning the next visit :) i wish the week lasted longer.

we took a trip to old man's cave...this place was gorgeous and i still can't believe that in the 1800's someone lived in these beautiful caves.

david and i rode on the super zip line at hocking hills and it was so much fun!! the line went through tall trees and over a river-we loved it!

the rock and roll hall of fame was amazing and david was in heaven! he loved seeing all the guitars and memorabilia of his favorite musicians.

it was such a good trip and i loved spending time with my parents. i miss them lots and lots. i can't wait to go back!

i have started many collections in my lifetime, but i have only kept up one the whole time...my flat penny collection. i have lots and lots! i get them from everywhere and love the memories they keep.

i have a total of 5 penny books, all of them full :)

i try to keep them organized by place/location of where i got it. besides the disneyland books, there is a good mix of places in each book.

this was the first book i started with my sister and i'm pretty sure this was my first flat penny. i remember being so excited because the colossus at six flags was my first roller coaster ride ever!

i also collect flat nickels (middle) and flat quarters (right). i don't have too many of these because they are rare to find and more expensive to make, but really cool since they are much bigger than a penny.

these four are probably my most treasured pennies. the one on the left from colossal caves in tucson is a special memory for me-it was one of those fun adventures with my parents that i loved and will always remember. the next one from birch aquarium in san diego was also a lovely memory of a simple day in sd-those were some of the best vacations. the third is probably my most treasured since it was given to me by my grandpa. i love that he thought of me when he was on vacation and got it for me (it's about the simple things sometimes). the last from seaport village is special just because i truly do love san diego so much and seaport is one of my favorite places there.

as you can see these simple flat pennies hold so much love and memories and i will probably always collect them throughout my life. i see no reason not to.

this season is full of wonderful colors, fun accessories, and cute styles! one of my favorite is pretty colored shorts! i remember wearing different colored shorts when i was younger, and i'm glad that the style is back in. i think the fact that the colors are some what muted (or 'vintage' as some describes it) makes the shorts that much cuter!

so i paint my nails a lot. like every few days. i love it :) i decided to share my favorite polishes and must have supplies.

stickers are underestimated these days. they add a simple accent and are just cute!

probably the coolest way to do nails. they stay on forever too! just wish you could use them one at a time, like for accent nails, but they dry up if you leave the package open :(

these have been my go to colors this season...quite the mix, i know.

i love this combo. and how can you deny a hello kitty shaped bottle?!

my must have supplies include...

3. a wonderful tool: perfect for touch ups

4. love this tool...not sure what it is technically called, but it cleans under nails super well and it quite handy.

i have nothing really interesting to say today, my mind is just full of randomness (monkey monkey underpants!--that's for you Hilary). so i won't judge you if you don't want to read this post...

exactly one week from today i will be on summer break. i'm so excited. i'm completely drained from this semester.
i wanted to open my new etsy shop on may 1st...as you can see that has been delayed.
apartment hunting sucks.
david made my lunch today. i think that is just adorable.
i somehow magically fit in my old pair of bermuda shorts (totally wearing them today!)
hulu plus on xbox is my new favorite. brilliant.
i'm officially caught up on grey's anatomy and anxiously waiting for the next episode.
i'm completely craving cheese puffs right now.

david and i are participating in an interactive art exhibit tomorrow!! i'm so excited :) we will be working with a police sketch artist and describing each other! its called "Remember Your First Love" at the Scottsdale Art Museum.

so i decided to make one of my favorite doodles into a painting to hang in our bedroom. i love the simple black and white composition-its very striking on our wall.

easter recap

this easter was bittersweet...actually all holidays now are bittersweet without my parents being here. it just doesn't feel like a true holiday without them. but other than missing them so much, we had a good time. the boys went crazy finding easter eggs and i managed to make a green bean casserole that tasted just like my mom's :)

my rainbow cupcakes were a hit with the boys (of course)!!

overall, i loved spending time with my siblings and nephews and i am very grateful to have them in my life.

ever since my facebook got hacked and i got tangled in a money scam (don't worry, i didn't lose anything!) i have been anti-social media. i deleted my facebook and vowed to never look back (don't know how long that will last, ha).

i still don't have a facebook, BUT i did start up my twitter again and started a tumblr too! look at me go :) so all of you social media junkies out there should definitely follow me. i promise to follow you too :) go ahead, click on those links on the side...

i use photoshop actions on almost all of my photos now. it is incredibly easy and there are many free actions to download from fabulous people (links at the end).

first, start with your original photo. have it cropped and any other blemish fixed, etc.

next, find your loaded actions and pick one out :)

finally, press play! seriously that easy.

i have decided to start growing out my hair. i haven't had long hair for about four years now (long time!) so i am going to give it a try. i usually give up around shoulder length since that is when i lose patience and can't stand it in "awkward" length. but i will give another go. i can do it. i can do it. i will just keep up these pictures to keep me inspired.

i just got back from my amazing/awesome/spectalur trip from new york!! i went to celebrate my very best friend's 21st birthday :) it was a complete surprise for her and it was the best ever! we went to the city, went shopping, and got the best cupcakes ever!!

crumbs...an amazing, delicious cupcake. i wish i got all of them...just look at those delicious things.

did i mention we met kathy griffin??!! she is hilarious and i love her red hair :)

the crafting history of megan: part two

(this is my first ever embroidery piece!)

after cross stitching, i naturally moved on to embroidery. after discovering elsie and her beautiful patterns, i was hooked! i loved the simple pieces and how i could make little projects for everyone i loved. i still embroider today using patterns from red velvet and sublime stitching mainly.

i believe i then tried crochet next (this is probably because the yarn and embroidery alsies are right next to each other at the craft store, hah). this is a hobby i have definitely grown into. i still simple, i think a scraf, and now i love it! i successfully taught myself how to make a granny square and now i'm working through twinkie chan's crochet book! i love her patterns.

during this time, i also tried painting. this hobby is a love/hate relationship for me. acrylics are my absolute favorite, but i also go through the moods where painting is so far from my mind. i definitely have to feel that inspiration to paint and i don't always go directly to painting when i want to craft. don't get me wrong, i LOVE painting (so much so that i tattooed a paint bottle on my arm), but i also went through some tough times with it too. it will always be on my top five crafts though.

next, i moved onto soap making! i love it! soaps make the best gifts and party favors and there is endless possiblities. soap making was probably the easiest craft to teach myself. i love all the scents and soap shape molds. highly recommend to anyone who wants to try :)

skipping ahead a few years, i started my favorite craft ever...sewing. this has taken over my crafting life. i love creating purses, shirts, dresses, bags, and all sorts of cute stuff with my sewing machine! i recently updated my sewing machine and i couldn't be happier! i have many patterns in the works now :)

crafts i tried, but didn't stick...

wood burning-kind of scary and it smells weird.

felting-takes some patience to finish a piece.

engraving-a very loud hobby.
stamping-not my go to tool in scrapbooking.

crafts i still want to try...
knitting-it's one of my goals this year.
quiliting-i would love to finish a nice big quilt.
origami-just because.
hand dying fibers-looks so interesting.

well that's pretty much it...history lesson finished :)

i have noticed i tend to pick the color of my pen with my mood in that point in time (today i picked red, aka feeling busy)
david packed my lunch today...he is so sweet.
we still have gift cards from christmas to use. we should probably go out soon.
i wish there was more time in the day to get things done and relax too.
i have vacation soon and i am super excited.
i do not like going to the doctors and i had to go today. i always reward myself after :)
i'm completely failing at project 365. oh well.
i started using post it notes like crazy again.

i have been doing my own nails quite a bit lately and i found out what a pretty combo houndstooth and neon purple make! i bought a box of houndstooth nail effects after reading about them on the dainty squid. I love them so far! I hope they last as long as they say they do :)

since i have gathered quite the collection of polishes now, i decided to get this cute little caddy to hold it all. i love it and its prefect (and only $7!).

i don't know what's happening....but i just finished a digital scrapbook layout!! i always said that i would probably never start digitally scrapbooking because i always loved the pretty papers and supplies, but now that i'm a pro in photoshop, it kind of hopped into my lap one day. and to be honest, it was a lot of fun :)

i love hands on paper scrapbooking too much to leave it behind now, but i will probably make a few digital pages here and there!

my lazy kitty

i probably have the laziest kitty ever. she is quite large, cough*fat*cough and she sleeps all day. i love her though. she makes me laugh all the time with her cute and crazy personality. for example, the other day i walked in to find her laying down with her whole head in her water dish. she is so lazy that she has to lay down to eat and drink! oh i just love her!

my favorite is how her whole face is just soaking wet!

i love the month of february! reds, pinks, and purples fill all the stores, everyone is focused on loving one another, and of course the sweetheart candy! i love those candy hearts-delicious!! this year for valentines day, david and i are keeping it simple and making dinner at home and just spending the evening with each other. i can't wait. i'm also going to try out a new cake recipe-i'll let you know how it turns out.

the crafting history of megan: part one

ever since i was a little girl, crafting has been a part of my life. i have really expanded my love to almost every crafty thing out there and it has been quite the adventure. i love learning/teaching myself a new craft and experience. there are those crafts that have really stuck with me and there are those that i probably won't do again, hah. but it's all about learning and growing. so i decided i would/should document my experiences with crafting and share it with all of you! without further ado, here is part one of my crafting history...

it all started with cards. yes, something so simple as making cards exploded into the hobby that has taken over my life. if i can remember this right, my mom needed a card for my grandma's birthday and i volunteered to make it for her. this was most likely because i just wanted to go to michaels, my favorite store, ha. and so it began and i was hooked after completing my card and seeing the reactions of everyone. it still makes me feel so good when people open my cards and feel the love and personal touch a handmade card gives.

carding making led to scrapbooking--the worst enemy of my wallet and small living space. scrapbooking supplies are like drugs. i keep needing and wanting more and more. it is definitely addicting and i love it! this is one hobby i will always have and come back to. i love to go back and look at my first scrapbook ever and see how far i have come in both skill and creativity.

i believe the next crafty hobby i tried was jewelry making. my mom and i went to my aunt's house where she showed us all of the pretty things she was making and we decieded that it would be fun to try! we went and got our tools and pretty beads and went to town :) we were hooked and made so much jewelry that we started giving it out to everyone! i still make the occassical piece, mainly for my etsy shop or just because i see a really pretty charm/bead.

shortly after, i started cross stitching. at the time i had a mentor/friend named Julia, who taught me so much about life and also shared my love of scrapbooking. she taught me how to cross stitch after i saw some of the beautiful works she created. i did have some experience of cross stitching before when my sister and i would make little squares that would read "i love my cat" but nothing as intricate and detailed as Julia's stitches. needless to say i have yet to complete a full piece of work, ha. i got distracted with another craft (of course).

so there ends part one of my crafting history. i will be back soon with part two. i hope you feel like you are getting to know me more through this little history lesson (that was kind of my purpose).

i feel pretty: make-up tutorial

i made more of an effort to actually do some fun stuff with my make-up this week and i sure do feel pretty :)

yesterday i tried a new combination of colors and it really turned out good! here is a little step by step on how i accomplished this look...

1. start with eye shadow primer. this is a must for long lasting, all day wear of eye shadow! i never wear shadow without it anymore.

2. take a mixture of black and dark brown shadows (a dab of each on the brush) and put in the outside corners of the lid, going about 1/4 into the lid.

3. layer the black and brown with a plum color, extending that into the middle. this gives the black and brown a softer look.

4. next take a yellowish gold color and put that in the inside corner, just slightly blending it into the plum.

5. use a shimmery white to highlight the corners and below the eyebrow.

6. finish with black or brown eyeliner and mascara!

don't you look pretty :) i also decided to go all out and wear red lipstick too! i'm not much of a lipstick person, but i do make a point to wear it sometimes.

planner restyle

i love getting a new planner/life organizer for the new year, even though I usually change my system mid-year. but i have a feel this year that i will keep this one for a while. it is prefect! it has the weekly view with enough space to write down plans, with the opposite page completely lined paper so i can make my to-do list for the week! exactly what i need. i was pretty excited when i found it :)

but the only problem was that it was plain jane black. which is kind of boring to me. so i gathered some of my favorite stickers from my stash and went to town!! i had fun and love the mismatch and collage style of it now.

i love it! it even has a pocket in the back to hold those loose papers and such. and it is completely recyclable-go green :)
